Mayor Bloomberg Stands Up For Mosque This link is to the speech transcript as delivered by New York City Mayor Bloomberg.
My sentiments exactly, Mayor Bloomberg. My one visit to New York and eventually Ground Zero was unbelievable. The manner in which New Yorkers from every corner of the globe moved through the city and showed respect and tolerance for cultural, racial, national, religious and even sexual differences surprised me. I never understood how it was that New Yorkers fit into the life and culture of Hawai`i so well, until I visited and discovered, they were as much a melting pot as we were, if not more so.
9/11 hurt me in a way I can’t even explain to this day. The images I couldn’t turn off still choke me up and make me cry. But I am also tired of Americans living in fear of everything. Muslims, Mexicans, Liberals, Socialists, hijabs, vaccinations, skin color, names, Wall Street, soldiers, veterans, and whether or not someone is more American than another. It’s a sad state of affairs when we can’t put aside our superficial differences and just be.
America was founded on the principal that all men are equal. It has taken us centuries of slavery, sexism and conquests to figure out what that meant. It only took one day to throw us back to the dark ages.
It truly is time for Americans to be American again. No more fear. We should not stand broken. We have no right. We are a mix of immigrants, conquered and stolen peoples who now choose to call America our home. It is our home. When the hammer falls, we raise the red, white and blue, place our right hand over our hearts, and give thanks and praise to whomever or whatever we hold most reverent.
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
We welcome everyone willing to work hard and “play by the ever morphing rules” into OUR nation. We, who are sons and daughters of immigrants, conquered and stolen people, have no right to deny, unheard, the request of our brethren to breathe free.
A Mosque is a place of worship and praise. It is not a hovel of the damned. There is no valid, legal defense for not allowing it to be. Only prejudice and ignorance stand in it’s way. Neither of which is an honored value of America nor should be supported or encouraged anymore. We need to stop living in fear. We need to be American.
